Pupils from Flamborough School’s Little Sprouts gardening group swapped the classroom for the flowerbeds recently, rolling up their sleeves to help residents at The Maltings with a spot of summer gardening, before walking away with a cheque of their own to say thank you!
The children spent the afternoon planting and pottering alongside residents in the home’s courtyard garden, part of an ongoing partnership between The Maltings and Little Sprouts that home manager Rob Hall says brings real value to everyone involved.
“There’s something lovely about watching a resident who’s spent sixty years with soil under their fingernails passing on tips to a seven year old who’s never planted anything before,” said Rob. “It isn’t about the garden looking nicer, although it does. It’s about our residents having a reason to get outside, share what they know, and feel useful. That matters just as much as any activity we put on.”
To thank the group for its continued involvement, The Maltings presented a cheque for £250 from Fisher Care’s Community Kindness Fund, a pot set aside specifically to support the local groups and causes that partner with Fisher Care homes throughout the year.
“Little Sprouts has been brilliant to work with,” Rob added. “The kids turn up keen, ask brilliant questions, and our residents genuinely look forward to their visits. Supporting them back felt like the least we could do.”
The gardening session is the latest in a run of community projects at The Maltings, which sits at the heart of Bridlington and has made building genuine local connections a priority since opening.
Fisher Care’s Community Kindness Fund is available to all of its homes, supporting causes and groups that residents and teams care about, from local schools to charities and community projects.
